James Marcus and his novel are profiled in the ”Works in Progress” column at Booklist:
”The Only News I Know chronicles the fortunes and misfortunes of hack film critic Henry in the year and a half after 9/11. As his marriage with Deborah falls apart, Henry decides to escape his professional and personal cul de sac in NYC by going to cover the war in Iraq.”
Dean has posted a good piece about the blog/critics debate at MetaxuCafé
I’ll be there – 19th Annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair Dec. 2nd & 3rd in NYC. Lots of great readings, discussions and exhibitors.
I bought a book from Dalkey Archive Press’s fancy new Website – I suggest you check it out. (if interested, I bought Harry Mathew’s 20 Lines a Day). A significant fact is that this site is separate from the Center for Book Culture where they used to be housed.
I’m not trying to become a Pynchon source, but I have a friend who doesn’t really read blogs except he checks out mine and he’s a TP fan, so these links are for me when I’m finished the book and my friend as mythical reader of this blog:
TEV interview with Duncan Muller on Pynchon first editions.
TEV’s Zak Smith interview
“Against the Day” reading blog.
The Pynchon Wiki is now open and running.
Mark Thwaite of Ready Steady Book will be guest blogging at the Poetry Foundation, a site that is becoming a real treat.
I’m reading Pynchon and avoiding reviews until I’m done. When it’s time to crack the hatch of opinion my first stop will be the Literary Saloon’s Against The Day page for roundup of reviews and other links.
good palindrome site (via Max)
Maud reports many bookstores are staying open until midnight tonight so Pynchon fans can get their first crack at Against The Day as soon as it goes on sale. However, my local neighborhood bookstore, BookCourt was openly selling the book last weekend.
I guess it was only a matter of time before Robert Fagles tackled the Aeneid. One reviewer says his translation could be the “best in 300 years.”
