kept me from reading as much as I would have liked over vacation (oh, yeah, and that little guy known as my son, who insists that I’m tigger more often than Dad, happily diverted my attention from the huge stack of books that I took). Still, what I did read, I wholly enjoyed and will be writing about in more detail soon.
Our brief estivation was at Lake Waramaug, in Northwestern Connecticut, a unique place that seems to be inhabited by millions of gnomes who, with near invisible speed, busily cut all the grass, trim the bushes and trees, and groom the weeds to maintain the area’s edenic splendor. It is amazing really, how perfect the place looks, and it was pretty sleepy; perfect for me because I didn’t want (or have the energy) to do anything more than lay around reading books and play with my kid, and as it turns out, solve a lot of NY Times crossword puzzles, which I find oddly relaxing.
While at BEA earlier this year, I asked Molly at Coffee House Press what one book, given a few of my preferences, she would recommend. She picked Laird Hunt’s The Exquisite, which was a fantastic book and right up my line. I also gobbled up Sara Gran’s Dope, McEwan’s Saturday and a few others, including some short stories by Guy Davenport in his collection A Table of Green Fields, which I picked up at a local used bookstore (we hit ‘em all). I also spent some time reading Jorie Graham’s poetry (Erosion) and a few tidbits from Joseph Brodsky.
Now I’m re-energized and ready for the fall.
Glad you had a good time! If you happened to go to the Northville IGA and saw someone negotiating with a little girl over candy purchases, it was probably me...we live about 10 minutes down the road.

There’s nothing quite so restorative as a vacation spent with family--and books! Enjoyed your recommendations.
