I’ve only known about Sara Gran since MetaxuCafe came about. First, I read a bunch of blog posts talking about how great she was; then there was the Mad Max Perkins’ revelation that she was the brilliant novelist that he had written about earlier in the year while he was still anonymous (and therefore couldn’t name Gran).
She has a blog (a member of MetaxuCafe, to boot – the only member who is also a subject of posts). Here’s a recent entry that, as a newly minted Brooklynite, I found particularly funny:
New York is an awful place for a writer. Especially Park Slope, which is where I’m from and where I’ll be staying. This is the worst place on earth for a writer. You go to a bookstore and the “local authors” shelf has paul auster and jonathan safrin foer. Let me tell you, no one’s too impressed with your little foreign rights sales in Park Slope. No one’s too proud of your little books now. Mother and Dad wonder why you can’t get Letham’s publicist. HIS picture is in the library and for God’s sake, he’s from Boerum Hill! That’s like one big housing project! My little neices ask why I don’t have a big house like “the pretty lady who wrote History of Love an’ married that rich guy!” Your local paper is the NY Times and believe me, you’re not getting a lot of loyalty there. There’s no “local writer publishes book!” articles in the times. You travel anywhere else in the country and people say, “Gee, you REALLY published a book?” In Brooklyn they ask who’s handling your film rights and if you’re getting any points on the back end.
Hi Mr.Bud Parr,
Thank you for the mention, and for all the great & wonderful stuff that is MetauxCafe. It’s really great to be a part of it--I’ve been meaning to write for a while, actually, just to say how much I like it (metaux), and thank you for the enormous task that it must be. It really serves it’s purpose well--it’s introduced me to a lot of cool sites I would have otherwise missed, and it brings lots of folks to my site. You’re awesome.
All the best,
Sara Gran

Nice post. That IS how I imagine Park Slope. Not easy to compete with Auster, especially for us poets. NO one cares about poets.
