Chekhov's Mistress

Champion on Murakami

by Bud Parr

This guy Ed really is a great writer. Here are a few words from his review of Murakami’s Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman:

The collection is not without its gems. When Murakami taps into his panache for merging the mundane with the surreal, he is a focused and delightfully phantasmagorical writer. In “Birthday Girl,” a waitress is forced to bring dinner to a mysterious restaurant owner who never leaves his room. The owner grants her an unexpected offer, and Murakami closes the tale on a graceful note of ambiguity, refusing to reveal the exact nature of what occurred…

…There is no doubt that Murakami has talent and a keen imaginative voice, but panning for gilt in this murky collection yields more fool’s gold than the effort is worth.

Is there your wry way of suggesting that I came up short? smile
