I’m happy to see the possibility of a blog coming out of Dalkey Archive, one of my favorite publishers, but, I agree with Chad, the new Website is problematic. One to watch. Also from Chad Post’s Three Percent blog, I see the promise of a new internationally oriented bookstore opening in NYC that will organize their books by country. McNally Robinson used to have their books organized by country, but I don’t think they do now, although the most important thing is just to have a well-rounded selection in the first place and, in my view, treating books in translation the same as any other.
okay, all from me in my taxed haze. As soon as I muster some energy I’ll post about my reading last Sunday night.
Hey Bud—just for the record, we originally had our literature section organized by country/region—then abandoned it because it was too difficult to find things. But we missed it so much that we thought and tinkered and came up with a new system to make sure we could browse by country AND find that random author when we had no idea where they lived. And over Thanksgiving we reinstated the country/region system. Every continent has its own shelves, and especially prolific literary nations have their own subsections. So you can find your Oe’s with your Murakami’s, and your Wildes with your Woolfs and Wodehouses, and your Vargas Llosa’s with your Garcia Marquez’s. Hooray!
But also, Idlewild is the project of a good buddy of mine, David Del Vecchio, who comes from a background in the U.N. and knows way more about the international scene than I ever will. I’ve seen his beautiful shop under construction, and I’m so excited for its opening!

Thanks, Jessica. Your note reminds me that it’s been three years since I wrote my little guide to NYC independent bookstores: [link] (which used to occupy the #1 google spot for searches on the topic). The connection is that your buyer, John, I think, wrote me then to defend the space MR had devoted to literature - passionate employees, I’d say.
At any rate, I’ll have to revisit the list, particularly since Gotham, which was my top pick, is no more, and I also didn’t have any Bklyn shops. I’ll be sure to do my proper investigation of MR, which you’ll note from the list, occupies a pretty high spot.
