Chekhov's Mistress

Death and the Dervish, by Meša Selimović

by Bud Parr

Fiction, Selimovic, Bosnian Literature, Don’t Go in the Basement

Death and the Dervish, by Meša Selimović is a dark and elegant narrative told from the perspective of a 14th century dervish who is forced to confront his own moral ambiguity when his brother is arrested. Selimovic was a Bosnian writer whose own story parallels many of the themes found here. The book can be a little frustrating – in that “don’t go in the basement” sort of way – as Sheikh Nuruddin, the main character, wallows in doubt. This is not a fast read, but worth the time and effort.
