That is, USA Today book reviewers don’t seem to bother reading before declaring a book “overrated:”
William Vollmann’s Europe Central. Upon receiving the National Book Award for fiction, Vollmann said of his 800-page opus of intertwined stories about World War II: “I’m very happy it’s over, and I don’t have to think about it anymore.” So are we (and we didn’t get past page 200).
Gee, that’s not very professional – and this is the model that other papers are aspiring to. Scott Esposito has a few choice words for USA Today and, even better, he has some good comments on the novel. And just for fun, do a Google search on: vollmann USA TODAY. It’s amusing to see Scott’s headline up there.
