This looks like a worthwhile endeavor: Bookwormz. It’s a user-based database of independent bookstores searchable by zip code and incorporating Google maps.
I think it just got started, so go over and input all your local favorites. I started with BookCourt in Cobble Hill and Freebird Books in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with many more to come. Bookwormz could end up being a good alternative to BookSense, which is not always complete (I’m guessing because it’s based on membership) and does not include the two stores I input.
