I Can’t Take Another One: Chumley’s Closing

by Bud Parr

I see from Maud that Chumley’s is closed – indefinitely. As literary landmarks go, this was a favorite for me because it was one place that had retained its character despite being on the tourist map, unlike some other places. Part of the fun of the place was just getting in the door: There were no signs and one entrance is through the courtyard of an apartment building; a holdover from its days as a speakeasy during prohibition. After the passing of Gotham Book Mart, this is a blow for the New York I would have remembered had I lived here back when these literary landmarks were earning their status. And where, I ask, are the new literary landmarks of the current generation? Starbucks?

Starbucks… that’s just wrong.
