Chekhov's Mistress

Maggie Nelson finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir

by Bud Parr

I really thought Maggie Nelson’s Jane a murder was a terrific book and I said so in a post last July. Via Soft Skull’s blog I see that she was nominated for a PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir. In other words, if you didn’t believe me that it’s a great book, believe those guys. Enough Said.

I read her first book, Shiner I think it’s called, a while back. I really liked it. I keep meaning to look into Jane: A Murder, but .. eh, me and poetry, it’s been a while.

Agreed! This is a delicous novel—her prose like poetry. It was her book—and being lucky enough to catch her at a reading—that got me refocused on writing again. The strength & clarity of her words kicked me in the butt and reminded me what I’m supposed to be doing!

I’m so pleased that she’s being honored for her work.
