(Rain date: Saturday, June 11)

May 11, 2005 — New York City readers and music lovers can look forward to kicking off the summer with a daylong block party and book sale from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on June 4, 2005, on Crosby St. (between Broadway and Lafayette) at Prince Street.

Hosted by Housing Works Bookstore Café, the bookstore run by the citywide not-for-profit organization that provides services for homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS, all profits from the sale will benefit clients of Housing Works.

Tens of thousands of books, records and CD’s for literary and music enthusiasts of all ages and tastes will line the streets of SoHo, on sale $1.00 or less. Inside the Housing Works Bookstore Café at 126 Crosby St., a cultural mecca that the New York Times has called “one of the hottest literary hubs in New York . . . the bookstore salon that the city has been missing,” all books will discounted by 30 percent. Housing Works Thrift Shops will also be featuring scads of exclusive merchandise!

Timed to coincide with the June 4, SoHo Stroll, a biannual event that attracts droves of consumers to nearby shops, as well as the publishing industry’s annual BookExpo America convention at the Javits Center, the Housing Works Open Air Book Fair will feature outstanding music all day long, with well-known DJ’s spinning rocking tunes until early afternoon and the jamming live sound of Queen Esther, Mike Errico, and others from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Other delights for visitors include:

• Free iced coffee all day!

• Limited-edition event T-shirt with purchases of $25 or more, while supplies last!

• Enter a raffle to win all sorts of exciting prizes!

• Have a great time for a great cause!

More on Housing Works:

Housing Works Bookstore Café Fighting AIDS One Book At A Time

Housing Works Bookstore Café is an independent cultural center that offers patrons a unique opportunity to join the fight against AIDS and homelessness. Arts-based philanthropy in practice, we allow visitors to make a difference simply by buying or donating books; eating at our cafe; coming to concerts, readings, and special events; or volunteering for our staff.

We are a non-profit organization that relies entirely on donations to stock our store and volunteers to run it. All proceeds directly benefit our parent organization, Housing Works, Inc., the nation’s largest minority-controlled AIDS service provider. Housing Works provides housing, healthcare, job training, and advocacy for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. As an activist organization, we are committed to implementing the systemic changes necessary to ensure that AIDS and public health policies are sound in concept and equitable in administration.
