Chekhov's Mistress

One Small Step For Literature In Translation

by Bud Parr

One Giant Leap for Mankind. The New York Times reports that the NEA’s inaugural International Literature Awards of $10,000 went to Dalkey Archive Press, Archipelago Books and Etruscan Press. The awards will be matched by the NEA’s partner nations in this initiative, Greece and Spain.

The awards aim to “to provide American readers with greater access to quality foreign literary work in translation.” Bravo to that and congratulations to three great publishers who are committed to literature in translation.

Here are the individual projects:

Archipelago Books: Vredaman, a novel by Basque writer Unai Elorriaga.

Dalkey Archive PressI’d Like, a collection of 13 interlinked short stories by Greek author Amanda Michalopoulou.

Etruscan Press: Amerikaniki Fouga (American Fugue), a novel by Greek author Alexis Stamatis.
