As part of the “Pen World Voices” New York Festival of International Literature, Pen America is hosting two talks on Don Quixote:
Don Quixote at 400: A Tribute
Saturday, April 16th 7-9 p.m.
Margaret Atwood, Paul Auster, Assia Djebar, Claudio Magris, Norman Manea, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Laura Restrepo; introduced by Salman Rushdie
First published in 1605, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s novel about a man under the spell of fiction has been casting its own spell on readers everywhere for four centuries. The story of Don Quixote has become a kind of natural resource, not only for writers but also for filmmakers, musicians, and artists of all kinds. In this celebration of the first modern novel, internationally renowned writers talk about its continuing global impact, and film clips and musical interludes present some of its many metamorphoses.
Where: The New York Public Library, Celeste Bartos Forum: 5th Ave. & 42nd St. (Enter on 42nd St.)
Co-sponsored by LIVE at the NYPL, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Centenario del Quijote de Castilla La Mancha
Ticketing: $10 general admission; $7 for Library donor groups. Tickets available from Smarttix on-line at www.smarttix.com or by phone at (212) 868-4444.
The Global Quixote: Reinventing Cervantes
Sunday, April 17th 4-6 p.m.
Edith Grossman, Susanne Lange, Aleksandra Mancic, Aline Shulman, Barber van de Pol
Borges’s Pierre Menard could not be with us, but this gathering does include translators into English, Dutch, German, Serbian, and other languages who all share Menard’s experience of transforming and recreating Cervantes’s masterpiece for a different place and time. These virtuoso literary performers will discuss their art, and the specific issues of rendering the Quixote into their particular context.
Where: Instituto Cervantes: 211–215 East 49th St.
Co-sponsored by the Instituto Cervantes and the Centenario del Quijote de Castilla La Mancha
The NYPL event on Saturday has unfortunately sold out. I have a ticket but am not certain whether or not I can make it, as Desplechin’s “Playing ‘In the Company of Men’” is showing the same night and John Butcher and Gerry Hemingway are playing a duet show. (An embarrassment of riches.)

Will any of the Don Quijote talks be published in some form? I am particularly interested in finding out about Susanne Lange’s ongoing new translation into German, i.e. any discussion of the aims of the new translation, insights, problems, etc.
