Lately when I can’t write, I look in the dictionary and pick a word then write down the definition of that word and any other definitions of the word (I have tons of dictionaries) I can find and then what I think of the word and so on. I write about how the word sounds and other words like it. I write what I think it might mean if I didn’t know what it means, and so on and so on again.
That process tends to crank things up. I’m sure it’s not unique, but as far as I’m concerned, I made this little particularity up myself.
So that brings me to “Poetc.com.” It’s a site, along with “OneWord” and “OneCaption” that task you with little word games that are appealing. Today’s the first time I tried it. On Poetc, you are tasked today (apparently they change) with writing 10 words in 60 seconds (plenty of time) with the condition that you use no personal pronouns. I almost slipped on the personal pronoun, but here’s mine:
desultory moods flitting among trees the better of two gets -aid
Of course when you do this, words that have been floating around in your head come about immediately, so it’s not hard being that you don’t have to think about anything other than writing down a few words. But sometimes that’s good.
The instructions for OneWord are…
“simple. you’ll see one word at the top of the following page.
you have sixty seconds to write about it.
as soon as you click ‘go’ the page will load with the cursor in place.
don’t think. just write.
And OneCaption’s instructions are also…
simple. click ‘go’ and you will see a photograph
and a blank box with a cursor waiting
for your one sentence caption.
you will have sixty seconds to complete your entry.
keep it short. be clever.
Beats solitaire.
