Not sure when I first heard about this, but the formerly quiet Plimpton Project is making a splash with a full page ad in the NYRB and I’m guessing other places in order to raise money for a statue of the famously fun writer and co-founder of The Paris Review.
Toby Barlow never met George Plimpton, but has managed to get many of his old friends together for his quixotic project, according to Book Forum. So far though, friends or no, the project has only raised $4,000 of its $20,000 goal. I guess there’s no rush though, as Barlow says the NYC Parks commissioner told him you can’t get a statue in Central Park for five to ten years after the person’s death. Hey, even Shakespeare had to wait over 250 years.
So go to the Plimpton Project site and donate or something. I think they’re throwing a party. Somehow I don’t think that at least will be very Plimptonesque.
