Speaking of Book Design: Chris Raschka

by Bud Parr

image title One of my favorite children’s book illustrators is Chris Raschka (Table Manners, The Hello Goodbye Window, Charlie Parker Played Be Bop, all of which are wonderful) and I recently found his John Coletrane’s ‘Giant Steps’. Although my kid (I have to say something like “my eldest” now), my eldest loves the first three I mentioned above, he hasn’t warmed to Giant Steps yet. It’s not easy for a three year old to follow, deconstructing a jazz tune, but he’s involuntarily heard the music many times. Nonetheless, it’s one of those childrens’ books that adults love and I’m sure it will remain part of our library long after the boys are all grown.

I love Coltrane, more so than any other jazz musician. Giant Steps is easily his most recognizable piece, and My Favorite Things take his approach pretty far.
