Chekhov's Mistress

Speaking of Pen America

by Bud Parr

They have one of the finest literary journals I’ve ever read.

Pen America is a fellowship of writers devoted to “advance literature, promote a culture of reading, and to defend free expression.” They sponsor occasional events of interest to writers and generally do good things (guess I’m not feeling too expressive today).

That’s all nice, but the journal is terrific. Among other things, each issue highlights a prominent writer with other prominent writers writing about the prominent writer. All are household names, that is if your household contains a well stocked library.

The latest issue includes tributes to Samuel Beckett and Gertrude Stein, as well as writing by John Ashbery, Joseph Brodsky, Italo Calvino, Lyn Hejinian, Heather McHugh, Grace Paley, Fernando Pessoa, Rainer Maria Rilke, Bruno Schulz, Susan Sontag, Wislawa Szymborska, Saadi Youssef, and many more.

There is no content on-line so you would probably have to subscribe. The journal is not expensive and every issue is a keeper.
