I’ve only done my glance-through at the bookstore of STICP, and it does appear to be well written, but this bit from Tribe seems to get to the heart of the matter:
I did wade through Marisha Pessl’s Special Topics In Calamity Physics. Well, not all the way through. I got about three quarters into it and the constant clever and mean-spirited descriptions of people just turned me off. The book is very, very well written, Pessl does have writing chops. But, as I’ve related privately to others, you know how you’re chatting with someone who is obviously very intelligent and all the entire conversation is biting comments about other people that happen to be very funny and witty and then you start to wonder if this fucking person is really making fun of you?
Well, that’s how I felt reading Special Topics In Calamity Physics. So fuck that. Who needs it.
