Chekhov's Mistress

Unbridled Enthusiasm

by Bud Parr

One of the best things to come out of my writing on the Web for the past couple of years is to learn about independent publishers and to think about books in terms of who publishes them. That helps narrow the field to something more manageable when figuring out what book to read next. One publisher I like is Unbridled Books.

One reason I bring them up now is that they have smartly adapted their Web presence in to something like a blog format, creating a place where readers will want to come back often to see what’s new. There’s an RSS feed, but it doesn’t seem to work just yet.

Here’s an excerpt from the latest entry, written by publisher Fred Ramey:

In the August 22 issue of Business Week, Jonathan Karp explained his new imprint, Warner Twelve — so named because it is slated to publish twelve (12) books a year. He is doing this, he says, to afford him the opportunity to promise “authors and their literary agents that we will publishing nothing other than their books for a full month.”

We at Unbridled suspect he will quickly learn that — for the books he handles that are neither blockbuster novels nor celebrity-authored — “a full month” is nowhere near long enough.

Mark Sarvas and Jessa Crispin get some love, sort of, from the CSM: Book blogs’ buzz grows louder. I’m always amused at the tone of these articles. They consistently wonder about the impact blogs are making in the world of media (and in this case, publishing). Valid, but there’s more to it and it’s really like wondering if the Green party is going to take over the Republican party anytime soon. “Whatya call’em? Blogs? Write up a story!” the editor says, and this is what we get. Actually, it’s a good article, but I’m waiting for some more enlightened coverage.

And, I guess because it’s the CSM, this was a little funny…

Jessa Crispin, the Chicago-based creator of a high-profile blog with a risqué name (“book” plus a vulgar term for a woman of loose morals).

Hmm, could it be “Book Floozy?” Maybe the blog is called “Book Trollop,” or “Book Hussy.” Whatever it is, they went so far as to leave it out of the list of recommended litblogs at the bottom of the page despite writing about it in the article, maybe that’s why Chekhov’s “Mistress” is never there! (article first seen at Collected Miscellany.)
