The BBC reports that the mayor of a Mexico City district is requiring each of his 1,100 police officers to read a book every month to help combat the “popular conception that Mexican police are corrupt, incompetent and lazy.” He wants to make them “better officers and better people.”
Even though 20% of the force can’t read, the list of books, which the officers will be tested on, includes Don Quixote and The Labyrinth of Solitude by Octavio Paz. (at least they won’t have to quibble over translations.)
“However, according to the mayor, classes will be given to those with reading difficulties. There is no chance of anyone getting away without doing the reading. The policemen will be regularly tested to make sure they have read the books they name. ”
