Where Wise Men May No Longer Fish
I had long held out hope that Gotham Book Mart would reopen, in part because when I walked by there were employees inside. It was eerily mausoleum-like actually, because everything was in place, including the receptionist at the front desk, yet the gates were closed. Anyway, last time I made it by there was a large for sale sign in the window, so I suppose that’s the end of that and, other than the Strand, the end of the old-line bookstores. Nonetheless, The Sun reports there are new bookstores opening up all around us and I’ve noticed a few more besides those they mention too.
The most interesting store the Sun article mentioned was at Jazz at Lincoln Center, which has “transformed its gift shop into an authoritative source for jazz books and recordings.” I think I’m going to have to round up Mr. Marcus and spend some time perusing.

I’ve long held out the same hope. I’ve actually been browsing the blogs tonight looking for some definitive word. I’ve found fond rememberances of the store and a few locals lamenting it’s closing, but clearly that little world ended with a whisper.

Stephen - I’ve been by the store a few times (whenever I’m in midtown). The store sits intact, closed up with a realtor sign out front. The way things look, I would speculate that they are looking for a buyer who will keep the store running, but again, that’s only speculation based on the fact that they haven’t (since my last visit) packed anything away.
