Word of Mouth, an Association of Women Authors has delivered an open letter to Oprah Winfrey asking she select contemporary authors for her book club.
From Buzz, Balls & Hype:
[The letter] lays out a theory that it was the closing of her contemporary book club, even more than 9/11, that has affected the face of the literary landscape of our country.
More than 150 authors including 4 Pulitzer Prize winners, 17 National Book Award finalists and winners; 3 MacArthur recipients; and 36 Guggenheim and 18 NEA fellows, as well as winners of American Book Awards, Southern Book Critics Circle Awards, PEN/Malamud and Whiting Prizes, an Orange Prize and a Newbery Medal have signed an open letter today to Oprah Winfrey, asking her to re-instate her book club.
Unfortunately, according to a Reuters news report “A spokeswoman for Winfrey’s company, Harpo Productions, poured cold water on the idea. ”There are no plans to change the focus of the book club at this time,“ she said.”
Hey kids, there’s always the Litblog Co-op!
UPDATE: Scott at Conversational Reading has some thoughtful opinions on this, coming from the publishing industry.
